10.10.2009

gather to hear the words of a prophet

Date? October 2-6, 2009
Where? Salt Lake City/Sandy/Provo, Utah
With Who? Natalia, Jackie, Liesl, Katie & others :)

On Oct. 2nd, Natalia, Jackie, Liesl and I headed down to Provo in my car.
We made pretty awesome time from here to Ogden.
Can you believe that even when someone is going 90 you can still be going SLOWER then the flow of traffic?!
Crazy huh.
So we get to Ogden, and traffic decides to suck it up and slow down to snail speed.
It was pretty much like that all the way to Provo.
The reason?
Well ya see, the football game that night was against Utah State, and so about then was when we started hitting the game traffic.
That combined with all the students going down from Idaho PLUS the regular friday rush hour traffic, turned our 4 1/2 hour trip into a 6 1/2 hour trip.
But that is ok because the weekend was still fun.
So I dropped off Liesl and Jackie for the weekend, and met up with Katie.
Her, Natalia, her roommate and I, went for the last quarter of the football game!
Picture:

And then we went to the training table where you seat yourself and then order through a phone at the booth!
Pretty much made my whole night.
Then we spent the night in Sandy at Natalia's aunt's house because in the morning we took the Trax up to Salt Lake.
That was quite fun.
I kinda enjoy public transportation when all the mormons are riding it.
It makes the trip not so scary so to say because you don't have many creepy people riding it.
Conference was amazing.
We went to the Saturday morning sessions.
Here is a picture on the trax :)

Ate dinner with Katie, Amy and Robert Saturday night, and Sunday between conferences as well.
Sunday, picked up my crew again, and we left for Rexburg.
It was very rainy almost the whole way back.
PLUS, it snowed a little in pocatello!
Oh, and get this: the rain, made my car DIRTY!
That's right, like the drops came, and when they dried, there was dirt in its spot!
Well, that's my trip!
I love life, and being lds, and having amazing friends/family.

9.07.2009

the trip across two states.

so yesterday we (as in natalia and i) started out to rexburg, id
planned on leaving at five in the am, however, that's when i woke up.
haha.
so we left at six.
it was pouring down rain.
pretty uneventful for a few hours.
then in la grande, which is like four to five hours into the trip, we met amber on the road!
that was kinda fun.
especially after nothing-ness most of the morning.
around two all three of us decided to eat lunch in meridian, id (close to boise).
after that, somewhere in the middle of nowhere, we (natalia and i) resolved to stop and pick wild sunflowers on the side of the freeway.
HOWEVER, there was a rest stop close so we went to it instead.
and this is the reason for my blog.
we took pictures and here they are :)
the sun was in our eyes... but we have wild sunflowers so its ok :)

9.02.2009

8.16.2009

summer end.

I'm three weeks from going back to college.
It's a little weird because I'm having mixed feelings about leaving.
I'm not as stoked as I once was.
I got comfortable at home, but now I'm just going to be leaving again.
I don't like moving constantly.
I need one home.
Stability.
Oh well, it was still fun... and I really am excited to see friends and room with Natalia.
Highlights of summer:

7.30.09

Today has been fun!

This morning: babysit Shelby
-when she woke up from her nap, she was calling my name. so cute! it made me feel special. :)

This afternoon/evening: went to cedar creek with mom and annie and kathy's families. brought jake with me for the first time! ah he was so cute to watch. he finally was walking on a leash instead of trying to back out of it every second! yay! what else... oh he was on the inner tube with me after swimming a little bit for the FIRST time!

isn't he just the cutest thing?

Tonight: I've learned that its NOT a good idea to give ryan ANY money. not unless he gives you his first. he owes me $640 at the moment. can you say stressful? because that money is the money for school.

and i'm still sickk. i dont like colds. they worsen at night and in the morning. no bueno.

7.21.2009

Beginning.

I'm starting a blog I'm going to use as my diary.
I'm going to write down all my thoughts and feelings here... when they come to me.
We'll see how this goes. :/
<3 ash.

7.10.2009

Re-emphasize what's already been said

People need to freakin' do what they're supposed to.
They also need to work for the money they're earning.
And not just sit on their butt when another person is overloaded with work.
Common courtesy would be to help.
DUH!
-ashley is out... and going to bed so she can go work more in the morning.

6.18.2009

6.14.2009

quick. before she rants some more.

man i wish i was back in rexburg right now.
don't have to deal with crazy parents lashing out at me for no good reason.
and i would be able to just deal with my stuff and not have to worry about everyone else's crap that needs to get done because the other people who SHOULD be dealing with it aren't.
its ridiculous.
do what you're freaking supposed to do people.
come on.
its not that hard.
and even if it is, then GREAT!
then you can learn something from doing it.
i'm sick of having to deal with everything else.
screw summer.
i just wanna go back to school.

6.13.2009

its been a year.

Class of 2008

a year ago i graduated from high school.
feels weird going to graduations now and knowing that was me a year ago.
honestly don't remember much of the actual ceremony.
sad.
i just remember how happy i was that i'd accomplished 12 years of school,
just to go off to school again.
and that weird feeling of "i really did all those grueling requirements?"
lets just say that graduation was a good day.
and that college is SO much better. :)
congrats class of 2009!
<3

just got the diploma.

"you go straight then take a left at the Apostle of the Lord"

Well, just to let all of you know, I am currently in Provo, UT and having a WONDERFUL time with my family and the friends/cousins that we have.
I finished up my first year of college Thursday the 9th of April, and the next day my family and I drove to Idaho Falls where we went to the Museum of Idaho and took the "tour" of the Titanic exhibit that they have going on there. It was fun. We were all issued boarding passes and got to be people who were actually on the Titanic. Once we got to the end, we found out if we lived or died. My whole family lived, I died. Sad huh. But that's ok because Keiton came and saw me which was awesome because I got to see him before I left. Then we went to the Potato Museum in Blackfoot, ID. haha, yeah, a potato museum. We got "free taters for out-of-staters". bahaha. it was a little box of dehydrated hash browns.
When we got to Provo, we went passed it and headed on to Payson, Utah, where "Elder Lange" (or Kristopher) lives and our families met each other. They fed us dinner too. It was fun to hang out and meet them.
Today my family and I got up early, went to the Bean Life Science Museum on the BYU campus and watched a live animal show that my cousin Katie did (because she works there). Then we met up with Kristopher and drove up to temple square in Salt Lake City. We had an AMAZING spiritual time, starting off with watching the Joseph Smith movie. I cried so much at the end... AGAIN. Then we found some Sister Missionaries and took a tour of Temple Square. We went into the Tabernacle and learned about how awesome their acoustics are. Then we went into the Visitor's Center that has the Christus and got a family picture in front of Christ. SO HAPPY.

After this the other people in the tour left, and those sister missionaries took Kristopher and my family to go see the conference center. Now Kristopher knows a lot more about the conference center then us, but he was just along for the ride. And when we were in the Hall of the Prophets.. yeah. It was just a really good experience.
For dinner that night, my family decided to go this place called the Brick Oven. Kristopher was no longer tagging along, but Katie was now. So we get seated, and a couple minutes later my mom hears a lady go by saying something about an apostle (one of the top leader's in the lds church) was there. THEN a minute later, Elder Jeffery R. Holland and his family pass by our booth on the way to their table! CAN YOU BELIEVE IT?! I was ecstatic. Definitely starstruck. It was then that Katie and I decided that we were gonna "get lost" on the way to the salad bar. However, we for some reason went to the salad bar first, and there was a line, and next to our line my mom and Brad were in the pasta bar line... and Elder Holland and his granddaughter come down the steps! He patted Bradley on the head and was like "hey you. Do you know what kind of pasta you're getting?" And Brad, having no clue, just shrugged his shoulders and said "eh. I don't know." After that, Elder Holland came over to where Katie and I were, put his hand on my back and gave me a side hug, and shook Katie's hand and asked us how we were. I was just about to die of happiness at that point. NEVER in my entire life did I think that I would get a hug from a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles! That right there made my whole life worth living. That right there is actually the whole point I decided to write this blog. This man right here, is an amazing man, and I was fortunate enough to receive a hug from him.

Well, to finish off my story, Sunday my family went to church down in Payson with Kristopher's family, and then we ate an Easter dinner over at there house. After that, we headed back home, driving all through the night. We reached home at 5:30am. It is now Tuesday (yes, it took me a couple days to actually write this blog) and I today is my first full day home! I'm off to find a job and work out.So until next time!

those warm fuzzy feelings

they are found when I:

-see flowers poking out in an area that's not so pretty
-sit in the park with the sun shining on me while i talk with a friend
-realize that i'm going to be seeing my best friend and family in 3 weeks :D
-and get letters from that one missionary.

Those have just been some highlights of my life lately.

Simply Special

This is the Personal Narrative I wrote for my English 101 class. I'm very proud of it so I thought I'd share it.

“Mom, I really don’t feel like doing anything tonight. It’s just New Year’s Eve. It comes around every year!” I complained.
“I know, but personally I’m glad to get rid of 2008. It was a bad year. Actually, I was thinking of going down to the church party. Do you think you could bear to do that and come with me?”
“I guess.”
As I dragged on a new pair of jeans and got ready for the long night ahead of me I couldn’t get it out of my head why I just wasn’t in the mood to celebrate the New Year with everyone else in the world. It would be like every other new year before it. Everyone plays games, eats junk food, and then fifteen minutes before midnight, gathers to simultaneously countdown from ten to zero and shout as if the whole world needs to hear you: “HAPPY NEW YEAR!” Nevertheless, I forced myself to do this for my mom. She needed the company. She and the Church weren’t getting along so well at the moment. So, going against my will, I started putting on my makeup in order to be presentable for my oh-so-fun night ahead of me.
“It’ll be fine,” I told myself as we walked through the doors of our ward building. “You’re here for mom. This is making her night and she needs that.”
“Hey Mom look, they’re playing Bunko in the primary room. We could go do that.” It didn’t sound like such a bad idea. Bunko is an exciting and fun game. I would have to teach her how to play, but it is worth it, I thought to myself.
“Oh! Oh! Bunko! Bunko!” is the most common phrase I heard for the next two hours. By this time I couldn’t believe that we had been playing for so long! I was actually having fun.
“Well Honey, do we want to go somewhere else?”
“I don’t care. We’ve got an hour. Where do we want to be when the clock strikes twelve?” I inquired, hoping that it wasn’t any place where there would be a ton of people. Don’t get me wrong, it was fun playing Bunko with the fifty odd people there, but I was tired of the public scene. “Honestly, I think it would be cool to go somewhere that would mean something, and where there aren’t a whole lot of people.”
We de¬cided to ask around to find out what spots were the favorites of the crowd. No one really had any good ideas that were close enough. Go figure. When you live on the outskirts of a town with about 5,000 people there isn’t really anything that special close enough. Finally, we got a suggestion. The old Grist Mill. Its fifteen minutes out of town, and out in the middle of the country where there are mostly trees and not a lot of people. Of course! That would be a neat place to go. It’s simple, yet it sits on the edge of a small cliff with the Cedar Creek down below. That wouldn’t be a bad place.
Fifteen minutes until the only midnight celebrated every 365 days, we climbed into my little Honda and headed off towards our final destination. Two rights, two lefts, and a lot of curvy road in between. Time started running out. It was a little farther than we expected it to be. I stepped on the gas a little more, forcing the speedometer from 50 to 55 miles an hour. “Oh please let us get there safely and in time,” I pleaded to myself as I tapped the brakes around yet another foggy corner. With a minute to spare, we reached the covered bridge and leapt out. “Whoosh!” All of a sudden the noise of a full creek invaded my eardrums. It was no longer a creek, but a small river with water rushing by as if it were late in meeting up with the next body of water. We hurried over to the edge of the wood-covered bridge in order to try and put a picture to the noise. There wasn’t much light, but what we could see was magnificent. Even though I had been to the refurbished old Grist Mill plenty of times before, it was completely different at night. The dark didn’t allow it’s details to pop out, but that was ok, because they didn’t matter anymore. It was a whole new world, a whole new atmosphere. The feeling was exhilarating. Who knew such a simple place could cause so many different emotions to come forward.
“Wow… this really is the perfect place” my Mother awed. “It is just where I needed to be.” She looked so at ease with life. I felt as if I co¬uld ask her for anything and her response would be “sure sweetheart, whatever you want.” I was so glad that I could be there with her at this moment. A firework went off in the distance through the trees. “You think that means it is midnight?”
“Um, hold on, I’ll check. Yeah it’s New Years, and has been for two whole minutes.” I had gotten so caught up in the sounds of nature all around me that I had forgotten we were crunched for time when we arrived. That didn’t matter anymore though, because I was in a beautiful spot. Nothing could ruin the moment. The snow from the previous three weeks covered everything, making it all the more serene. What could make this any better? I was with my mother in one of the most beautiful scenes I’ve experienced in my nineteen years on this earth. I felt refreshed, like everything was going to be all right from here on out. The past was behind me. I left it in the car. None of the trials I had been going through mattered anymore. I had my family and that is all that mattered. My mother seemed to be feeling the same way, as she stood leaning up against the railing with her head down and eyes closed.
We stayed on the bridge for half an hour just looking into the darkness and listening to the powerful force behind the water. The whole time not a single car went by. It was the perfect place to be. Unfortunately, it had to end. It was, after all, after midnight. So we forced ourselves to return to the car and go home.
As I climbed into bed I was reflecting on the night and a question came into my mind, “why was that so impacting? Yeah it was nice to go somewhere quiet with my mother, but I’ve gone there before.” Trying to feel the same way I did back on that bridge, I realized: it does not matter if I’ve been there before because this night was different. I was having an internal battle with myself earlier about the point of celebrating New Year’s Eve. This trip to the old mill, and being on that bridge with my mother, had shown me that there could be importance and symbolism in something as simple as a new year.
I was able to witness first hand what a New Year’s Eve celebration can do for my mother. Its not every day that I get to experience that. There have been other times in my life that I’ve seen a change in my mom, but I think being somewhere that was so in tune with nature made all the difference. Even though we would look out off of the bridge and only see the faint outline of the water and the surrounding conifer trees, it had a lot more meaning then it’s simplicity.
She and I didn’t just go to the old refurbished Cedar Creek Grist Mill, but to a quiet place that seemed almost uninhabited by anyone else in the world. Being able to be on that bridge at the end of 2008, my mother let go of her past and embraced herself for the future. I was able to be apart of that. Thank goodness we have a New Year’s celebration every year.

chocolate fondue & singing

So last night was quite fun! My roommates and i finally made the chocolate fondue we'd been wanting to since the beginning of the semester! Then Jason came over and had some with us. Here are some of the results:

After this we went stadium singing. Gotta love singing hymns in the cold! haha. No, but it really is amazing hearing all the people sing the beautiful songs.

The last thing i did was go over to Arcadia 5 and see Ryan, Joe, Ben, and Kaylin. Oh how i've been missing them.

So... to sum it all up: last night was great!

pictures.

So I figured that for my first blog post I would put up the pictures I have taken that I really love.
I'm a big fan of photography and I really enjoy taking pictures.
Let me know what you think of them.
Maybe you've got some critiques you'd like to give as well?
I'd really appriciate it, that way I can improve.
